Step in the Right Direction for Marijuana Legalization

Marijuana is illegal under federal law in the United States of America. Even though most states have legalized the drug for medical and/or recreational use, it continues to figure on the Schedule I (on par with heroin and LSD that are termed as ‘with no medical use’)of the Controlled Substances Act. In a major departure from the staid federal approach, President Joe Biden recently pardoned all prior federal offenses of simple marijuana possession. Eligible individuals will be issued certificates of pardon accordingly.

The New York Times reported that the pardons will affect about 6,500 people convicted of simple marijuana possession between 1992 and 2021 under federal law, as well as thousands more under DC code. The President further called on the governors to do the same at the state level. If they follow suit, this can translate into pardons for millions of ‘innocent’ folks.

In addition to this, he is also taking firm steps to overhaul federal marijuana laws by initiating an administrative review of federal marijuana scheduling.

Hope for the future

A change in the federal classification of marijuana finally seems to beon the cards in the not so distant future. This gives hope to the scores of cannabis users who are already deriving the medicinal and recreational benefits of this plant-based drug. The day may not be far when they will no longer need to be discreet about their usage or face discrimination over the same.

While it will take time for the social stigma to fade away, people will become more open to the umpteen benefits that lie in store.
